See and Hear: Yes Rebels - The Mixtapes

In an era of illegal downloads, the slow demise of record stores and the depreciation of the value of music, bands are having to find new and inventive ways of getting their music heard. For example, when Radiohead released 'In Rainbows', fans were allowed to pay whatever they felt it was worth.

Garage rock force 'Yes Rebels', who once existed in a previous guise as 'Fortune Drive', are one of the flagship bands on the Bristolian music scene. After being very quiet for a while the band have re-emerged with a very clever new publicity strategy that they call 'The Mixtapes'.

The idea behind 'The Mixtapes' is very simple. The band posts a live session of them playing a new track and tells their fans and followers to "share" the video. In doing so the "sharer" will then receive the track in question as a free download. Not only does it increase the radius of 'Yes Rebels' but also gives their dedicated listeners something back for supporting them.

And to top it all of, as expected, the tracks are of some real quality. The band have this week released the second track of 'The Mixtapes' called 'Thems The Breaks'. Both it and its predecessor 'Sailor J. Serenade' are perfect examples of Bobby Anderson's knack for great songwriting and also seemingly tapping into influences from multiple decades at once.

They are sure to be jumping back onto the modern music scene once a new release is sorted but if you want to hear more from the band I suggest heading over to the 'Yes Rebels' Facebook page and sharing the songs yourself. The videos for the first two tracks are below. Await the next videos as they're sure to carry as much bite.
